Rat Terriers
Country of Origin: United States.

Size: 7 - 18 inches. Weight: 5 - 35 lbs.(these are averages and my dogs are on the smaller/shorter end of this)

Coat: The coat is short, dense, and smooth, with a sheen. Whiskers are not removed.

Character: This dog is affectionate, uncomplicated, gentle, intelligent, and sensitive, and fearless.

Temperament: The Rat Terrier has sometimes been described as having a dual personality. He is a fearless, tenacious hunter with seemingly unlimited energy. When he is not hunting, however, the Rat Terrier is an exceptionally friendly companion, getting along well with children, other dogs, and even cats.

Care: When it is shedding, use a rubber brush to remove dead hairs.

Training: The Rat Terrier is an energetic, alert dog whose curiosity and intelligence make him easy to train.

Activity: Rat Terriers enjoy human companionship immensely and will enthusiastically share any activity with their owners.
I got my first rat terrier when I was 8 years old. She was my birthday gift and quickly became my best friend and loyal companion. She went everywhere I did and enjoyed just being with me. When I would go play "house" in our old barn, she was right behind me and one time she spent an entire 8 hours under the barn digging out gopher rats and bringing them to me as a prize. She was fiesty, intelligent, and loving. She knew that my sister did not like her, so she ALWAYS snuck into her room and chewed up her shoes, BUT she never once chewed anything of mine. She killed snakes at the pond and even a badger one time that was threatening me. I had to put her down at age 15 and it was one of the hardest things I have ever done. But I don't regret her for a minute.

If you are looking for a dog that will amaze you with it's intelligence, who is so easy to train and housebreak you would swear they already knew how, a dog that will go with you to the ends of the earth and be happy to cuddle up each evening beside you - Then these are what you are looking for. They are intensely loyal and always ready to do whatever you ask in a heartbeat..
Cocoa- Solid Chocolate Tuxedo Female This little old lady is one of my two permanent house dogs. She has been such a great friend and is the MOST loving dog I have ever had. She would just stay by my side and give me kisses all day if I would allow it. When I need some unconditional love and support, she's who I go to. She is around 13 years old this year. I do not know her exact age because I did not raise her. She came to me as a young female and I have always loved her attitude and disposition. She was a EXCELLENT mother and raised several litters of wonderful pups for me. Most All the dogs listed above are off of her. She is either their mom, grandmom, or great great grandmom. Cocoa has been retired from raising any more pups and she will live out the rest of her days in my loving care.
This is Cocoa on 10-29-07 with her great great grandaughter Lil Bit. Cocoa is a wonderful surrogate mother to Lil Bit and has taken her under her wing. As you can tell, though, Cocoa sometimes gets tired of all the energy Lil Bit has and she has to take a nap to catch up!
Fudge- 2005 CKC Registered Chocolate Tri(Tuxedo) Mini Female. Fudge stands about 11.5 inches tall and weighs 9lbs. Fudge carries the chocolate gene and also the gene for the calico pattern. This will be my last female out of Cocoa. She is a very dark chocolate color and is a knockout. She is also very tiny and petite with the perfect shaped lil head. The best size for a inside dog. She was raised in my house and thinks she is a person. She is very special to me as the line of rat terriers that I have had for 20+ years must carry on through her.
Lil Bit- 2007 CKC Registered Black Tri(Piebald or Spotted) Tiny Toy Female. She stands 10.5 inches tall and we are still waiting on a mature weight but she is VERY stocky! She was raised by a customer that had a male dog that was Cocoa's great grandson. She crossed him to her tiny, cute, cute female and got a awesome litter of pups. It has been interesting to see Bit be "raised" and grow up with Cocoa, her great great grandmom, and I am so glad that I got her.
Lil Bit is one of the smartest dogs I have ever had the joy to own. She believes she is human and gets insulted when you treat her like a common dog. She is very loving and sweet though and will be a great addition to our program.

Sir Blue Boy(Blue)- 2004 UKC/UKCI/CKC Registered *Tiny Toy* Blue Tri(Tuxedo) Male. Just look at him. Isn't he the most precious thing? He is very petite and small, 7 inches tall and Weighing in at just under 5 lbs at 3 years old. He is our cornerstone for quality here with our rat terriers and we look forward to many, many nice pups off of him. He has a champion pedigree and his ancestors were mainly the rare blue color. Don't let his size fool you, though, he definently has the rat terrier attitude and really wants to eat up any lazy cats that stray into the yard. Or will alert you several minutes before you can hear a car coming up the drive. This is one awesome lil guy.
Snow White(Snowy)- 2002 UKC Registered Apricot Bi(nearly Solid white-few apricot specks on her ear tips) female. Snowy has produced several blue pups. This is one spoiled rotten lil girl. She loves any kind of attention and petting and wants to sit in your lap all the time. She also is very intelligent and cute as a button;) She is very small(11 inches tall and 9 lbs), and very thick, very fine boned and weighs next to nothing. Love her alot. She has the dispostion that everyone out there is looking for!
Loftis' Pixie(Pixie)- 2003 UKC Registered Black Bi(Piebald or Spotted) Mini female. She stands 12.5 inches tall and weighs 10 lbs. Pixie has produced several blue pups. She is the cutest little girl and has become a favorite of my husband. She just sits in his lap and cuddles at night. She also has a very rat terrier personality and loves to bark at the cats and other dogs. She produces mainly blue pups off of Blue and we can't wait to get some pups of our own off of her.
Below are pics of some of my past Rat Pups. Aren't they just adorable!!
The 5 above pics are of Mouse at 12 weeks old playing with her sire, Blue. They were having a grand time. By the pics you can see how tiny and cute these dogs are and playful too.
Petite Gigite(Gidget)- 2004 UKC Registered Apricot Bi(Piebald or Spotted) Tiny Toy female. She is the dainty-est little girl. We ran across her by chance and just could not turn her down. She is our smallest female and is not much bigger than Sir Blue Boy. She weighs about 6 lbs and is 8 inches tall at her shoulder. She carries the chocolate gene. Spoiled Rotten!! Loves to cuddle and wants to play.
**** THE BEST THINGS ABOUT BLUE IS THAT HE IS GENETICALLY STRONG ABOUT PRODUCING VERY SMALL PUPS. HE REALLY SHRINKS DOWN THE PUPS WHEN CROSSED TO ANY FEMALE. HE HAS SOME MATURE DOGS OFF OF HIM THAT WEIGH IN AT 3 LBS!!!!****
