Joe Reed II was the 1943 World's Champion Running Stallion. This title was won on heart alone. Joe Reed II had received a severe barbed wire injury as a two year old. He also injured the frog of a front leg when he stepped on broken glass while he worked cattle on the ranch. This injury never healed and was a problem until the day he died nearly twenty years later.
After running on two bad legs for two weeks, Joe Reed II was too sore to train for the championship Finals against the current champion, Clabber (known as the "Iron Horse"). At the beginning of the race, Joe Reed II's injured frog broke open and began to bleed profusely covering both him and his rider with blood.Joe Reed II and the Iron Horse, Clabber, ran down the straightaway nose to nose and eye to eye neither willing to give in to the other. These two great stallions ran down the stretch in a dead heat. Joe Reed II, despite his severe pain, refused to lose. From deep within his courageous heart, he mustered the strength to begin to move ahead of Clabber an inch at a time until they reached the finish line. Joe Reed II won his "Red Badge of Courage" by a head over the great Clabber. Such was the heart and courage of this wonderful horse.

In the early years of the American Quarter Horse industry, Leo was known primarily as a sizzling speed horse. Later, he gained a hefty reputation of being a leading sire. Both his sons and daughters excelled on the track and in the show ring. The many titles won by Leo's offspring proved he not only sired speed, but also athletic ability. These traits were passed down from generation to generation and many of Leo's sons and daughters became leading producers of quality foals. Although no one knows for sure, Leo reportedly won 20 of 22 races in his career but he will most be remembered for his outstanding offspring which have strengthened the American Quarter Horse industry
One look at the massive hindquarters on this animal and it is very easy to see why Leo set and broke so many track records in the early 1940's.  One such record was set in 1944 at Pawhuska, OK. Leo ran for 300 yards in 16 seconds flat !!! It is reported that Leo was practically unbeatable in the Pawhuska area, a belief well founded considering that he won 20 of his 22 starts while there. At his prime Leo is reported to have been 14.2 hands and weighed around 1,100 pounds.  Leo sired 554 registered foals from 24 foal crops, and earned an AQHA Register of Merit in Racing, with his progeny turning in an impressive record with, 24 AQHA Champions, 69 Halter-Point Earners, 46 Performance-Point Earners, 33 Performance Register of Merits, 211 Racing Register of Merits, and 4 AQHA World Champions in Racing. While best known as a speed horse and speed horse sire, Leo remains one of the all time great broodmare and performance sires in Quarter Horse history as well. Siring Holey Sox who was rated AA on the track, and who was also the 1963 NCHA World Champion Cutting Horse.  Leo San, a son of Leo was a leading sire of AQHA and NCHA champions, siring both Peppy San, who was the 1967 NCHA World Champion Cutting Horse, and Mr San Peppy who won the same title in 1974 and 1976.  Lemac another son of Leo won his yearling halter class at the 1950 Ft. Worth Fat Stock Show, Lemac went on to sire Leolark, an AQHA Champion who sired Alisa Lark, the dam of two-time AQHA "Super Horse" RUGGED LARK.  The list of get, and the resulting generations from those get of the great Leo is long and distinguished, it is indisputable the mark left on the Quarter Horse Industry by this remarkable stallion.
