(STORY)
Tanquery Gin, one of the all-time leading sires of cutting horses, died at age 26 on March 22.
Glenn Blodgett DVM, horse division manager of the famed Four Sixes ranch, Guthrie, Texas, said the stallion was euthanized due to health reasons.
The stallion was by the late, great stallion, Doc O'Lena (Doc Bar x Poco Lena) and out of Gin Echols (Ed Echols x Gin Squirt (TB)). He made his mark in the industry by excelling in the arena and then as a sire. He consistently passed on cow sense, stamina and cutting ability to his sons and daughters, who are highly sought as ranch horses and as performers.
At the end of 1999, he ranked No. 29 on the all-time list of leading cutting sires, having produced 120 performers with earnings of $2,089,410 for an average of $17,412, according to statistics researched and compiled by Equi-Stat, a division of Cowboy Publishing Group, Fort Worth, Texas.
Tanquery Gin was bred by the Phillips Ranch, Dallas, Texas, then was owned by B.F. Phillips Jr., W.S. Morris III,  Augusta, Ga., and then at the time of his death by Burnett Ranches Ltd., Fort Worth, Texas.
He was trained and shown by Shorty Freeman, Era, Texas, now deceased. Tanquery Gin was ridden by Dennis Funderburgh to the finals of the NCHA Futurity and by Freeman¹s son, Bill, to the finals of the NCHA Derby.
The stallion, which had arena earnings of $14,500, had an abbreviated career when he injured a stifle. Instead of taking a chance that he would end up severely crippled, it was decided to retire him to stud.
Tanquery Gin was royally bred. Doc O'Lena set a record that still stands when he led all four rounds en route to the 1970 NCHA Futurity Championship. He went on to become a leading sire and grandsire of cutting horses.
Gin Echols, dam of Tanquery Gin, was an NCHA Bronze Award winner with earnings of almost $15,000 and earned her Superior Cutting and AQHA Arena ROM with 122 working points.
Four offspring of Tanquery Gin have earned over $100,000 in the cutting arena, led by Gins Solano, a 1981 gelding out of Solano Jill by Doc's Solano, with around $280,000.
Gins Solano, owned by Beus and Bongiorno and ridden by Gary Bellenfant, earned $207,176 in 1985 when he won the NCHA Breeders Cutting ($92,040) and the TQHA National Stakes 4-year-old ($28,628), finished fourth at the NCHA Super Stakes ($71,591) and gained the finals of three other aged events, including the NCHA Derby. The gelding also was a finalist at the 1987 NCHA 6-Year-Old Challenge and the Masters Cutting.
Miss Beefeater Gin, a 1981 mare out of Foxy Freckles by Jay Freckles, has earned over $167,900. The mare, owned by Oxbow Ranch and ridden by Mike Haack, tied for the Championship of the 1984 PCCHA Futurity and won the Harrah's Reno Futurity and Northwest Futurity.
Chopstick, a great 1986 gelding by Tanuqery Gin out of Miss China Cat by War Leo, owned by Gil Porter, Sandy Spring, Md., earned over $134,800. In 1990, Chopstick and Porter won both divisions of the Augusta Fall Futurity and then took the Non-Pro Championship of the 1992 Augusta Fall Classic. They also were finalists as a number of other major aged events.
Little Tanquery, a 1988 gelding by Tanquery Gin out of Doc Ada Pine by Doc Target Too, has earned over $108,300.
The gelding, while owned by Hanley Sanders, was ridden by Frank Craighead to third place in the 1992 NCHA Super Stakes. Little Tanquery was a finalist at a number of other major aged events.
Other leading offspring of Tanquery Gin include Ginnin Around, a 1981 gelding out of Ms Dust And Draw by RBM Duster Wolf, with $81,609; Timely Treat, a 1981 mare out of My Diamond 2 by Eternal Ben, with $79,767; Gincoe (1987 gelding, Maggie Coed x Rey Jay), with $79,128; Storks Gin (1983 gelding, Stork Club x Rey Jay), with $74,494; Cake Dust (1982 S, Sweet Baby June x Johnie Gay Bar), $73,212; Sip O Gin (81 mare, Tonta Bar Cutie x Tonta Bars Also), $72,591, and Judge Tanquery (1987 gelding, Dogtown Sue x Dog Town King), $69,188.
Tanquery Gin also was one of the industry's leading maternal grandsires, with over $838,400 earned by his daughters' offspring.
